We're used to bogus, inflated claims of losses due to piracy from the computer software industry, the movie business and the music industry, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see some crazy numbers saying ringtone vendors are losing money thanks to online "shoplifters". BYTE Craft Sdn Bhd has appointed CBS Technology Bhd as the solutions provider for an evidence management project with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. A Multimedia Super Corridor-status company, Byte Craft is the main contractor for the RM3mil project, which involves the deployment of technology, services and hardware. The company is providing system integration services for the project, while CBS Technology is supplying its Solmate RFID (radio frequency identification) Evidence Management System (REMS), as well as consultation, customisation and training. IBM Malaysia is responsible for the RFID infrastructure and hardware, Byte Craft said. The ministry is believed to be the first government body to adopt RFID-based technology in its operations, according to Byte Craft managing director Ahmad Azrin Zainal Abidin. The use of the technology would help eliminate clerical errors in recording data, remove costs associated with wiring and cabling, as well as provide portability and instant access to collected data, he said. CBS Technology chief executive officer Sun Chee Kong expressed his confidence that Solmate REMS would �?oenhance the Ministry�?Ts already stringent evidence management process.�?� �?oThe technology maintains the chain of evidence from the moment items are confiscated to the time they need to be produced in court,�?� said Sun. On Wednesday, Khazanah managing director Datuk Azman Mokhtar said the state-owned investment arm would focus on developing a new business model for Time dotCom and that the merger with Jaring would be a good fit. Time dotCom is 45%-owned by Time Engineering Bhd, which is part of the UEM group. �?oIt will definitely benefit Time dotCom, as it can take advantage of Jaring�?Ts existing customers,�?� SJ Securities head of research Wee Kim Hong told StarBiz. Jaring, the pioneer and second largest Internet service provider (ISP) in the country, has acquired about 700,000 active customers over the past 12 years of its operations. By comparison, the company's antiphishing toolbar for Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer (IE) browser has been downloaded around 100,000 times since its release earlier this year, he said. Earlier today. I had an email from Chris Pirillo of Gnomedex and Tech TV fame : He asked the question ” What’s your thoughts on Windows Vista ? with an invite to add to the soapbox on a mini-roundtable segment on The Chris Pirillo Show Web site and live stream.

Didn’t want to miss a chance to contribute my $0.02 — so here goes:

I think that the near term impact of Windows Vista will not be as substantial as those of us who are close to or tracking technology would like to imagine.

A consumer mass market - - with an installed base in the hundreds of millions, has one thing going for it. Mass.

It has one thing going against it. Mass intertia.

If you look at the long tail of machines still on Win 98 or Win2000, hardware 3, 4 years old or more (that’s 28 in dog years, incidentally) - that’s entirely adequate for those users. They don’t think of their machines as being old. And compelling power hungry applications - since gaming’s the province of consoles - haven’t hit that mass market with the same forces that make SlashdotReview or CHris Pirillo show listeners crave the latest, in either performance or eye candy.

Users on that long tail - even if they have upgraded to XP — their “day in the life of a user is this:

They are bedeviled with spyware, afraid of the media hyped virus or “evil hacker”, mystified by the jargon and still forwarding jokes and “cookie recipe hoaxes.”

To have impact beyond the “next scheduled release” Vista is going to have to clearly and distinctly promise and deliver a step up solution to those problems. As clear as “that’s your old B&W TV, this is color. ”

I just doubt that’s going to happen.

Besides, as Doc Searls says: We all run Linux or BSD anyway. We just call it Google or eBay ..

Those Tablet PC Podcaster Guys ( James Kendrick and Marc Orchant ) mentioned an upcoming Cool Tool on The Tablet PC Show #18 . Tablet PC Podcaster Guy #1 highlights Chris Pirillo's blog post about the arrival of Synctoy , a new powertoy that will apparently ease the process of syncing files between multiple computers.

Here's an excerpt from the download site:

SyncToy is a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows XP that provides is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without added complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.

A white paper is available for download at the site linked above and the Powertoy is due to debut in August. This could be very cool for those who have the need to sync files between computers. According to the white paper it was designed with digital photographers in mind but can be used to sync other files as well.

Last time I was in this auditorium it was for the Blog Business Summit. That was a break out time for me. A lot of that had to do with event blogging. Blogging live while Scoble was talking, while anybody was talking. But, man I can't seem to get into it this time. I think it's because the talks are too thought provoking. I think what's going to happen is that later tonight I'll be able to talk about the exciting stuff going on, what's going on stage that is. Off stage, this is the best part. I got to meet Nick Bradberry today. So cool. I was using his html editor when we could only dream of a WYSIWYG editor like this one.

I've finally met people like Dan Gilmor and Steve Rubel in person, people who I've been reading for a long time. Like all conferences this is the chance to meet the people you read and admire. This is your chance to just plain meet new and cool people. I've been absolutely humbled, elated, and blown away with people coming up to me and telling me that they read my stuff, they listen to my podcasts. Wow. Just amazing. I never could have imagined a year plus ago when I started that I would come into a place and say hi to people like Chris Pirillo (BTW, Chris, your mom is really cool, I had a great chat with her! Hi Mrs. Pirillo!) and Robert Scoble.

You know, this is what the blogosphere is all about. It's the giant global community. It's the relationships. It's the inside jokes. Most of all, it's fun.
